Hello all fellow seekers, I am Dao Yingzi.
We have fully covered the vital energy principles of spring’s germination and summer’s luxuriant growth in previous chapters. Many practitioners only know autumn is for moistening the lungs yet fail to grasp the dramatic cosmic shift from full outward dispersion to inward contraction. If you merely focus on dietary lung care without understanding the advance and retreat of yin and yang, your wellness practice will always remain superficial. All content here comes from my private research, exchanges with senior scholars, and personal insights. Feel free to leave comments to correct any oversights.
Let us move straight to the true meaning of autumn’s "Calm Containment". To fully grasp autumn harvesting, we first clarify seasonal calendars, observe three phases of autumn phenology, match them to monthly messenger hexagrams that govern heaven-earth qi, interpret the original Neijing text, and finally align the laws with human internal organs, step by step.

  1. Defining the Three Autumn Months
The three autumn months stretch from the Start of Autumn to Frost’s Descent, corresponding to the seventh, eighth, and ninth lunar months. The four seasons are divided via the ancient solar hexagram calendar based on the sun’s orbit, which governs the expansion and contraction of vital energy. The lunar calendar only records moon cycles and folk customs and cannot distinguish seasonal energy shifts.
Most people mechanically assign September, October, November of the Gregorian calendar to autumn, violating the law of descending terrestrial qi. The ancients identified autumn through natural signs: cool winds arrive and white dew forms for early autumn; insects hide and summer heat fades for mid-autumn; plants wither and heavy frosts appear for late autumn.
The three autumn phases correspond to three messenger hexagrams: Pi (Standstill) for early autumn, Guan (Contemplation) for mid-autumn, Bo (Splitting Apart) for late autumn. Throughout autumn, yang steadily withdraws inward while yin grows. Heaven and earth cease their mutual exchange of qi that prevailed in spring and summer.
  2. Interpretation of the Original Scripture Text
The three months of autumn are called the period of Calm Containment. Heavenly qi moves swift and crisp; earthly qi becomes clear and bright. Retire early and rise early, rising and resting together with chickens. Keep your aspirations tranquil to ease autumn’s harsh purifying qi; gather your spirit so autumn energy may settle evenly. Do not let your aspirations wander outward, to keep lung qi pure and clear. This is resonance with autumn energy, the way of nourishing harvest. Defying it injures the lungs, bringing undigested grain diarrhea in winter, for the supply of stored essence will be insufficient.
What does "Calm Containment" mean? After spring generation and summer flourishing, body and mind settle into peace with balanced vital energy. If you laid solid foundations in spring and summer, you naturally feel peaceful and ready to harvest in autumn. Those who wasted the first two seasons tend toward melancholy and unrest as autumn arrives — the root of seasonal autumn sorrow.
Autumn carries sharp, clear celestial qi; all creation stops outward growth and turns inward to store. Retiring early and rising early mirrors fowls that rest at sunset and wake at dawn. Stabilize your mood, curb restlessness, and draw scattered thoughts inward instead of dissipating spirit outward. Only then can lung qi stay pure and unobstructed — the core of conforming to autumn harvest.
Many mistake "gathering spirit" for passive inactivity, yet it is like clenching a fist to reserve strength for future expansion. This is profound wisdom aligned with heaven and earth. If you resist autumn’s rhythm by constant outward activity and extreme mood swings that scatter energy, the Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin suffers first. Impaired lung depuration blocks body fluid production, triggering mild symptoms such as dry nasal passages and nosebleeds, or fullness of lung qi. Come winter, insufficient stored essence leads to undigested grain diarrhea and weak digestion, damaging the reserves meant to sustain the coming year.
From the perspective of the Universal Interwoven Force Network, spring and summer energy spirals outward, while autumn energy retracts inward. The lung governs depurative descent of all bodily qi, perfectly matching heaven-earth’s contracting trend.

  4. Decoding Heaven-Earth Qi via the Three Autumn Hexagrams (Cosmic Principles Only, No Human Regimen)
Early Autumn – Pi Hexagram (Standstill)
Yang lingers above and refuses to sink down; yin settles below and refuses to rise. Heaven and earth disconnect. Summer heat fades, cool winds multiply, surface moisture dries, dry qi emerges, and rainfall lessens. Vegetation halts new growth.
    Mid-Autumn – Guan Hexagram (Contemplation)
Yin continues to expand as yang retreats further. Day-night temperature gaps widen, white dew turns to frost. Cosmic dry qi peaks; trees shed leaves and all creation abandons superficial flourishment to draw nutrients inward.
Late Autumn – Bo Hexagram (Splitting Apart)
Only a faint trace of yang remains, with yin fully dominant. Heavy frosts spread, most plants wither, insects and beasts burrow to hibernate, and heaven and earth fully prepare for storage.
  5. Observing Heaven to Understand the Human Body: The Lung as Autumn’s Organ
Heaven and earth govern contraction and descent; the human lung mirrors this function, specializing in depuration and inward gathering while rejecting outward dissipation. Metal restrains Wood, so autumn qi suppresses the liver’s upward expansion. The liver opens into the eyes, explaining widespread dry eyes and blurred vision in autumn; moderate animal-sourced nourishment eases this condition.
    Matching Early Autumn (Pi Hexagram)
Cut back outdoor activity that causes heavy sweating. Reduce pungent dispersive foods that counteract autumn’s gathering tendency. Prioritize sour flavors to anchor lung qi. Calm excitement and gradually quiet the mind. Practice slow deep breathing to exhale turbid summer qi and cleanse the lungs.
    Matching Mid-Autumn (Guan Hexagram)
Dry qi reaches its peak. Avoid heat-inducing meals and strenuous exercise that sweats heavily and drains lung qi. Minimize arguments and rage that lift qi upward unchecked. Raw pears clear dry heat; stewed pears nourish lung yin. Chinese yam, consumed with its skin and fibrous roots, carries sweet-sour properties to nourish both lungs and blood.
    Matching Late Autumn (Bo Hexagram)
Sharply limit all energy-depleting behaviors. Sleep early to preserve essence. Diet turns mild, warm, and inward-nourishing to lay foundations for winter storage.
  6. Basic Q&A
Autumn’s core principle is gathering. Spring and summer cultivate outward dispersion; autumn cultivates inward containment, which determines how well essence can be stored through winter.
Early bedtime gathers spirit; staying up late severely consumes lung essence.
Autumn forbids profuse sweating, which replicates spring-summer outward dissipation and harms the lungs against seasonal qi.
Autumn dryness splits external and internal types: external dryness is avoided through daily routines; internal dryness is controlled by cutting spicy and overly warming foods.
    Closing Remarks
The single core word for autumn cultivation is "gather". Align with the yin-yang progression of Pi, Guan, and Bo hexagrams: gather your sleep schedule, contain your emotions, and moderate physical movement to nourish lung qi. This text synthesizes ancient masters’ experience and my personal research for reference only. Writing takes great effort; support is appreciated as fate allows. The next chapter will cover concrete practical autumn wellness methods.
