Character:六

Hello everyone, I’m Dao Yingzi. Let us unfold this knowledge step by step.
In the previous chapter, we fully analyzed the character 五 (Wǔ). Following the cosmic evolution sequence from the Tao Te Ching — The Dao generates One; One generates Two; Two generates Three; Three generates all things — we illustrated how 五 marks the convergence of Yin and Yang vital energy to form the Five Elements, the starting point of human spiritual awakening that breaks the confinement of the Four Symbols. Today we will interpret the numerical character 六 (Liù), starting with its pronunciation, character evolution and basic definitions, then move on to orthodox I Ching and Daoist theories of Liu He (Six Directions) and Liu Yao (Six Lines), and finally share my unique personal insights.
- Basic Knowledge of the Character 六
Pronunciation: liù, the fourth tone in Mandarin, representing the number 6. When used in place names or mountain names, it reads lù, such as Lu’an.
Common collocations: Liu He (Universe), Liu Qi (Six Vital Energies), Liu Yao (Six Hexagram Lines), Liu Qin (Six Kinds of Kinship), Liu Yi (Six Arts), Liu Fu (Six Internal Organs), Liu Liu Da Shun (Everything Goes Smoothly).
Character Origin
In oracle bone and bronze scripts, 六 was a pictograph shaped like a simple thatched cottage. The upper strokes symbolize the roof, and the lower strokes represent walls and supports. Its original meaning was a temporary rural dwelling, the earliest form of the character Lu (cottage). Later, it was borrowed permanently as a numeral, so a separate character Lu was created to record its original definition.
The small seal script lost the pictographic form of a house. Shuowen Jiezi, the ancient Chinese dictionary, records: Liu is the number of the I Ching. Yin energy transforms at six and stabilizes at eight, structured from Ru (enter) and Ba (eight). After clerical transformation, it evolved into the regular script we use today.
Its formative logic follows the ancient tally system of 一,二,三,四 and 五.
Basic Definition
Its original meaning was rural cottage; later it was exclusively borrowed to stand for the number six. Extendedly, it refers to six categories of all objects, as ancient people divided nature, human body and culture into six corresponding systems. - Orthodox Interpretations from I Ching and Daoism
Following the cosmic evolution chain: The Dao generates One, One generates Two, Two generates Three, Three generates the Four Symbols, and the interaction of the Four Symbols births the Five Elements represented by 五. When the Five Elements’ Yin-Yang energy fully blends and fills all space, the character 六 emerges.
Five stands for the core hub of cosmic energy operation, while Six represents the complete spatial system that contains all living creatures.
Liu He — The Complete Cosmic Space
Five corresponds to the central Earth position plus the four cardinal directions, forming only a flat Five Elements framework. Six adds the upper sky and lower earth poles, collectively named Liu He: up, down, east, south, west and north, covering the full three-dimensional space and symbolizing the entire universe. Zhuangzi wrote: Beyond the Six Directions, the sage leaves all matters undiscussed. The Five Elements are the laws of energy, and Liu He is the space container that bears all energy circulation.
Liu Yao — The Number of Yin-Yang Transformation
In the I Ching, odd numbers belong to Yang and even numbers belong to Yin. Six is the number of Old Yin, representing the extreme of Yin energy and the transformation of all creation. Trigrams consist of three lines (Heaven, Earth, Humanity the Three Talents). Each of the Three Talents splits into Yin and Yang, so 3×2=6. All 64 hexagrams are composed of six lines, whose cycles reflect the waxing and waning of Yin-Yang and the generation and extinction of all beings, forming the fundamental model of all worldly changes.
Liu Qi — Vital Energies of Heaven and Human Body
The six fundamental climatic energies of heaven: wind, cold, summer-heat, dampness, dryness and fire, known as Liu Qi. They correspond to the six fu organs and six meridians of the human body in Huangdi Neijing. The Five Elements describe static energy classification, while Liu Qi depicts dynamic cyclic flow. Imbalance of the six natural energies leads to illnesses in humans, forming the resonance between heaven and humanity.
Extended Six-category Cultural Systems
Ancient scholars extended the rules of Liu He and Liu Yao to all existence: the Six Arts (ritual, music, archery, chariot driving, calligraphy, mathematics), Six Kinships, Six Fu Organs, Six Domestic Animals. The cyclic law of Six governs all cultural, physical and natural systems, establishing the holistic harmony between heaven and humans.
The Core Node of Yin-Yang Circulation
Five is the central point where Yin and Yang converge to generate the Five Elements; Six is the stage when Five Elements energy spreads to fill the Six Directions and complete the full cosmic cycle. Without the spatial carrier of Liu He, Five Elements energy has nowhere to circulate. The Five Elements are the internal driving force, and Liu He is the cyclic field; they complement each other and cannot be separated. - Personal Philosophical Reverie on the Character Structure
The following content is only my private reflective interpretation, not universally recognized orthodox classical doctrine.
Humanity gains spiritual awakening via 五 and breaks free from the cage of the Four Symbols. After awakening, humans must fully perceive the complete space of heaven and earth they inhabit — this is the profound Daoist meaning of 六.
The Four Symbols merely draw flat spatial boundaries that confine all creatures; the Five Elements provide inner laws to balance oneself; Liu He represents the complete, all-encompassing cosmic space, an essential stage for awakened humans to fully grasp the operating laws of heaven and earth.
The oracle bone form of 六 originally depicts a cottage, meaning humans have a shelter to settle between heaven and earth, where Yin-Yang vital energy can rest and circulate. The implication of "entering a dwelling" symbolizes convergence, compliance and circulation, matching the core feature of Six as Old Yin that governs convergence and transformation in I Ching studies.
The complete cosmic evolution sequence is extended and perfected as follows:
The Dao: Formless primal void, origin of all creation
One: Undivided unified primal Qi, undifferentiated Yin and Yang
Two: Separated Yin and Yang, two fundamental forces of the universe
Three: The Three Talents of Heaven, Earth and Humanity, carrier gestating all life
Four: The Four Symbols and four cardinal directions, flat tangible boundaries confining all beings
Five: Yin-Yang intersection births the Five Elements; human spirit awakens, breaking low-dimensional confinement
Six: The Six Directions form full cosmic space; Six Lines drive Yin-Yang circulation; Five Elements energy completes full cyclic flow, forming a closed loop of heaven and earth
Four only sets flat boundaries; Five is inner spiritual awakening; Six stands for complete three-dimensional spacetime. All creatures are wrapped within the Six Directions, and Five Elements energy circulates endlessly among the Six Lines.
If 五 is the key for humans to look inward and awaken the original heart, then 六 is the gateway for humans to observe outward and grasp the full operating rules of the universe. Only by penetrating the circulation of the Six Directions can one fully understand all tracks of generation and conquest among the Five Elements, and connect the inner self and outer heaven.
The character 六 contains two layers of imagery: the ancient cottage as the dwelling of the physical body, and the Six Directions universe as the dwelling of the spirit. When the body has a secure shelter and the mind relies on the complete cosmos, Yin-Yang circulates smoothly — this is the root of the auspicious folk saying "Liu Liu Da Shun (Everything goes smoothly)". Full Summary of the Chapter
Numerical evolution sequence: Dao → One → Two → Three → Four → Five → Six.
Five represents the Five Elements and inner spiritual awakening, the balance of internal energy; Six stands for the Six Directions, Six Lines and Six Vital Energies, the complete universal spacetime and dynamic Yin-Yang circulation.
In I Ching, Six is the number of transforming Old Yin. The Three Talents split into Yin and Yang to form six hexagram lines, depicting all changes of creation. The Six Directions cover up, down and four cardinal directions, symbolizing the entire universe. The Six Vital Energies connect heaven’s climate and human bodily Qi circulation, serving as the medium linking heaven and humanity.
From Four to Five, humans break spatial confinement and awaken the inner heart; from Five to Six, awakened minds perceive the full cyclic spacetime of heaven and earth. The Five Elements are the power of internal transformation, and the Six Directions are the outer field carrying all circulation. Only when both integrate can the movement of heaven and bodily Qi flow unobstructed.
The original pictograph of 六 is a cottage, implying all beings have a resting place and Yin-Yang follow constant cycles, which forms the cultural blessing of smooth fortune behind "Liu Liu Da Shun". Comprehending Five lets you cultivate inner balance; understanding Six allows you to master the full cyclic laws of the cosmos, unifying inner and outer vision to perceive all generation and extinction in the world.
Closing Remarks
This article integrates verified ancient character evolution, traditional I Ching theories of Five Elements and Six Directions, plus my personal insights derived from the structure of 六. There is no single absolute correct interpretation for ancient Chinese characters. Different classics and schools hold distinct perspectives. Just as Taoist talismans flow naturally from the heart without rigid fixed templates, every person may possess their own logic and judgment. I only organize and share these thoughts here, and all readers may evaluate and absorb them selectively.
Five is the sprouting seed of Huaxia civilization’s spiritual awakening, while Six is the first step for civilization to expand outward and fully comprehend heaven and earth. Grasping Five breaks the cage of limitation; mastering Six opens access to the whole universe. Together they construct the ancient holistic cosmology of harmony between heaven and humanity.
