Casual Discussions of Huangdi Neijing by Dao Yingzi | Episode 010

Hello all fellow cultivators, I am Dao Yingzi.
We began with an in-depth interpretation of Treatise on the Innate Truth of High Antiquity, then unpacked the core principles of spring germination, summer flourishing, autumn convergence and winter storage one after another. Following the law of yin and yang, we sorted out the corresponding laws between heaven-earth and the human body. Today we elaborate on the sixteen-word core mental cultivation mantra of the whole text: Avoid deficient evil and thief winds in due time; abide in tranquility and emptiness, so genuine qi follows naturally; guard essence-spirit inward, whence diseases have no way to arise.

The sages of high antiquity taught the people, saying: Avoid deficient evil and thief winds in due time; abide in tranquility and emptiness, so genuine qi follows naturally; guard essence-spirit inward, whence diseases have no way to arise.
Therefore, the will rests at ease with few desires, the heart is peaceful and free of fear; the form labors yet does not tire, qi flows smoothly. All follow their true wishes and attain what they seek.
They take delight in simple food, wear whatever garments suit them, and find joy in local customs, without envying those of higher or lower station. Such folk are deemed plain and unadorned.
Thus sensual cravings cannot strain their eyes, lewd and deviant thoughts cannot confuse their hearts. Foolish, wise, virtuous and mediocre alike remain unperturbed by external things, hence they align with the Dao. They can all live past a hundred years without decline in movement, for their inner virtue is complete and unharmed.
Conventional Interpretation by Later Physicians and Common People
Most later physicians and ordinary readers regard thief winds specifically as tangible external pathogenic factors: abnormal cold and heat of the four seasons, cross draughts, cold-dampness and summer-heat. "Avoid in due time" means adjusting daily routines and clothing in accordance with spring, summer, autumn, winter, dawn and dusk to evade environmental pathogens. Most annotations define tranquility and emptiness as restraining desires, calming the mind, letting go of comparison and obsession, so the spirit does not dissipate outward and innate genuine qi circulates smoothly. Guarding essence-spirit inward means drawing back scattered thoughts and emotions, preserving inner essence, spirit and qi. By caring for both interior and exterior, illness can be prevented. The extended passage about resting the will, limiting desires, being content with food and clothing, and not envying wealth or poverty describes a plain heart untouched by external temptations — this is complete virtue free of danger, the fundamental reason for longevity in ancient people.
From the perspective of practical cultivation, I hold a deeper practical understanding of the scripture. Thief winds are not merely external atmospheric winds; they fall into two categories: external wind and internal wind. Tangled thoughts generate invisible internal wind, which over time condenses into visceral lesions. Physical ailments in turn stir negative emotions, forming a vicious cycle. Many people strictly guard against external cold-heat pathogens yet still fall ill, because they fail to address internal wind born of rage, anxiety and overthinking, as well as latent innate wind inherited from ancestors hidden in the body. Emotional swings and life changes can trigger latent wind outbreaks — this constitutes the full meaning of "avoid in due time".
As for tranquility and emptiness, its superficial meaning is calming the mind and reducing cravings, while its deeper cultivation logic is quietude containing motion. During practice, shut out external distractions and settle the spirit completely; the physical form remains still, yet internal qi stirs spontaneously. Guiding exercises capture this inner vitality, which is the genuine qi mentioned in the scripture. Relying on genuine qi to unblock meridians and dissolve stagnation, once all vessels are unobstructed and genuine qi circulates autonomously, one will naturally enjoy hearty appetite and comfortable movement — this marks the official starting point of qi cultivation practice.
Guarding essence-spirit inward means more than restraining scattered thoughts; it means firmly anchoring the original mind, suppressing restless internal wind and subduing latent innate wind. Evade external pathogens, calm the inner heart, and consolidate the root source, so illnesses have no ground to form. Reducing desires, stabilizing the body and living plainly to achieve complete virtue is the external manifestation of a fully closed internal qi cycle in practical cultivation.
In the general four-season framework sorted earlier, external heavenly winds shift properties with the yin-yang cycles of the four seasons. Timely evasion of external harm is external maintenance, while unrestrained internal wind and latent innate wind are the core obstacles to overcome through inner cultivation. In-Depth Annotation Based on the Vigenic Force Network Theory
In conventional theories, craving and obsession artificially rupture the closed loop of bodily threads, causing unnecessary energy leakage. Tranquility and emptiness seal redundant leakage channels, retaining only energy exchange necessary for basic life activity. Sufficient stored energy within threads allows genuine qi to circulate orderly, fundamentally cutting off conditions for internal wind to arise. From my practical cultivation experience, profound inner quietude attained by closing off external dissipation is the prerequisite for genuine qi to stir within the body. Using genuine qi to clear stagnant threads layer by layer corresponds to the practical process of unblocking meridians and dispersing obstructions.
Per the foundational Vigenic Force Network theory, heaven and earth together form a universal grand force network, and every human body is a secondary thread subnet generated attached to the grand network. External deficient evil and thief winds are local energy turbulence within the heaven-earth force network colliding with bodily threads, causing qi and blood stagnation. Internal wind stirred by emotions is disorderly vibration of one’s own consciousness nodes, disrupting the movement trajectory of threads. Long-term chaotic thoughts solidify into physical lesions, while bodily stagnation disturbs spiritual nodes. Latent innate wind refers to hidden thread nodes left by ancestral force network imprints; external stimuli and drastic emotional shifts activate these hidden risks. "Avoid in due time" means evading external disturbances following the four-season rhythm of the heaven-earth force network, stabilizing thoughts to reduce vibration of internal threads, and avoiding triggers that arouse latent innate wind.
Spirit is the core master node of the human subnet. Excessive outward dissipation of the mind depletes core energy, making latent innate wind easy to awaken. Guarding essence-spirit inward means anchoring the mind to the kernel of bodily threads, stabilizing the entire subnet structure, restraining acquired internal wind within and sealing latent innate wind without. Fluctuations of the external force network cannot intrude, so lesions cannot form.
Taking delight in food, wearing comfortable garments, and not envying external possessions means the human subnet is no longer pulled and deformed by the grand external network, forming a complete closed thread loop — this is complete virtue free of danger. With a stable closed loop, no matter how the four-season heaven-earth force network fluctuates, internal pathogenic wind remains controllable. Unobstructed meridians and genuine qi circulating throughout the body are the most intuitive physical manifestation of the human force network approaching a fully closed state.
The entire theory follows the dialectical logic that "the only absolute truth is that nothing is absolute". Everyone differs in innate thread structure, latent wind intensity and emotional habits; there is no uniform standard for guarding against wind, cultivating the mind and practicing qi, and cultivation methods vary from person to person.

The sixteen-word mantra has three layers: externally, follow the four seasons to evade tangible heavenly pathogens; mid-layer, calm the mind via tranquility to regulate emotional internal wind; innermost, guard essence-spirit inward to stabilize latent innate wind. Neither the commentaries of ancient predecessors nor my current interpretations are complete or comprehensive; no one can grasp the full grand vista of the Dao to exhaust the true meaning of the scripture. What I express is merely a key to open the door, helping all fellow practitioners embark on cultivation and awaken inner wisdom, not a textual cage to bind thought. May all fellow seekers break free from the limits of my words, experience the truth personally, and seek their own correct understanding in higher Dao realms.
